Potentiometric Study of Antioxidant Activity: Development and Prospects

Abstract: The increasing interest in the study of the antioxidant activity of different objects is caused by an unbalance between the formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and the performance of the antioxidant system in humans under certain conditions, which leads to oxidative stress and pathological states of the organism. This article presents a brief critical review of the methods that are used to measure integrated antioxidant activity (AOA). It is shown that the most promising methods for measuring AOA are el… Show more

“…Solutions of the mediator system and its oxidized form was investigated as variants for replacing the gel. Since the rate of interaction of skin antioxidants with potassium hexacyanoferrate (III) in the aqueous medium is higher than in the gel , the use of reagent solution would allow increasing the detected signal and shortening the measurement time.…”

“…It is interesting to mention the fact that electrochemical [243][244][245][246][247][248][249] and ESR [250] methods are increasingly being applied to the determination of antioxidant capacity. The kind of technology and free radical generator or oxidant influences the antioxidant capacity measurement.…”

“…Several authors make a distinction between “antioxidant capacity” and “antioxidant activity,” stating that the former measures the moles of given free radical scavengers by a test solution, while the 2nd refers to a rate constant of the antioxidant effect on free radicals. In addition, other terms such as “antioxidant power” and “antioxidant ability” are also used, and they take into account the antioxidant effect (Ivanova and others ).…”
