Poultry manure effect on growth and yield of maize

Abstract: The effect of poultry manure application on maize (Zea mays) growth and yields was studied on a Ferric Acrisol in the semi-deciduous rain forest zone of Ghana. Eight treatments of 0, 2, 4, 6, 8 tons of poultry manure (pm) per hectare, 60-40-40 kg NPK/ha, 2 × 2 t pm/ha and 2 t pm + 30-20-20 kg NPK/ha were used in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with five replications. The study showed that poultry manure is a valuable fertilizer and can serve as a suitable alternative to chemical fertilizer in the for… Show more

“…O esterco de ave poedeira é considerado fonte importante de nutrientes para os vegetais devido sobretudo ao elevado teor de N (Boateng et al, 2006). A baixa relação C:N do esterco de aves (Santos et al, 2010b) favorece a disponibilidade da maior parte dos nutrientes aplicados às plantas, em especial do N aspecto que, juntamente com o baixo preço e a alta oferta de esterco, tem motivado a utilização deste resíduo como fertilizante e, sobretudo, fonte de N às plantas.…”

“…Hence, the use of chemical fertilizer may be minimized. Boateng et al (2006) found in their study stated that low rate of chemical fertilizer and suitable amount of poultry manure increase the grain yield. This is because of the complementary and synergistic effects of the organic and inorganic fertilizers.…”

“…The available N content amongst the IMBA categories were increased in the order growth boosters > partial replacements > total replacements. The higher available N from IMBAs used either as growth boosters or partial replacements are possibly due to synergy (Bokhtiar and Sakurai, 2005;Boateng et al, 2006 increased N content in heavier-textured soil of Potchefstroom ecotope. The available N content from both total replacement of NPK plots were insignificant than in the NPK check plots and was also consistently lower than the other active ingredients of IMBAs due to their slower N releasing potential (Belay et al, 2002).…”
