Pounding between Adjacent Frame Structures under Earthquake Excitation Based on Transfer Matrix Method of Multibody Systems

Abstract: In this paper, the case of two adjacent frame structures is studied by establishing a mechanical model based on the transfer matrix method of multibody system (MS-TMM). e transfer matrices of the related elements and total transfer equation are deduced, combining with the Hertz-damp mode. e pounding process of two adjacent frame structures is calculated by compiling the relevant MATLAB program during severe ground motions. e results of the study indicate that the maximum error of the peak pounding forces and t… Show more

“…Pounding, which could occur due to an insufficient seismic gap, is an issue that needs to be examined in terms of structural dynamics and earthquake engineering. For this purpose, there are several numerical but limited experimental studies in the literature on subjects such as the pounding force between two adjacent structures, the number of pounding, the moment of collision, and the determination and investigation of the size of the seismic gap [3][4][5][6][7][8]10].…”

“…In order to reduce the effects of a collision, it was suggested to use deformable elements in the earthquake joints. Zhang et al [5] created a mechanical model with the matrix transfer method and compared the numerical data obtained with different analysis programs. They examined the pounding force, the number of pounding, the moment of pounding, and the structural displacements between two adjacent structures.…”

“…However, this method, simple to implement, does not allow observing the propagation of shock waves at floor level nor modelling complex impact areas. Other researchers used frame models made of beam and surface elements, such as Jameel et al (2012) [14], Mahmoud et al (2013) [15], Yang et al (2019) [16] and Zhang et al (2019) [17]. These approaches, much more accurate, require modelling entirely both pounding structures, which drastically increases the number of DOFs and the computation time.…”

“…It was determined that the pounding increased in those cases without sufficient separation gaps. Zhang et al (2018) analysed pounding between adjacent structures based on a transfer matrix method without consideration of SSI, using structural software MS-TMM and ANSYS. The results showed an increase in pounding force and the number of poundings when there was a decline in separation gap size.…”
