Povidone-iodine solution as SARS-CoV-2 prophylaxis for procedures of the upper aerodigestive tract a theoretical framework

Abstract: Background The COVID-19 pandemic has raised concerns of inadvertent SARS-CoV-2 transmission to healthcare workers during routine procedures of the aerodigestive tract in asymptomatic COVID-19 patients. Current efforts to mitigate this risk focus on Personal Protective Equipment, including high-efficiency filtration as well as other measures. Because the reservoir for SARS-CoV-2 shedding is in the nasopharynx and nasal and oral cavities, the application of viricidal agents to these surfaces may reduce virus bur… Show more

“…This result is probably due to mechanical hygiene of the oral and oropharynx cavities. There is in fact evidence of the effectiveness of the gargle/rinse protocol since local action is associated the regions that are intimately associated with the development of COVID-19 and play an important role in the defense of the host [7,10,29]. In this sense, mechanical hygiene reduces the super cial viral load of the oropharynx and oral mucosa and could prevent upper respiratory tract infections [30].…”

“…The virus enters the cell through the connection between the virus spike and the ACE2 receptor, which can be abundantly found in the salivary glands. Therefore, some recommendations have suggested the importance of controlling and reducing the viral load in the oral and oropharynx cavity by using an antiviral mouthwash [8,9,10,11,13,14,33].…”

“…In lots of articles of scholars from different part of the world, use of PVP-I for intranasal and /or oral application is proposed or recommended, for COVID-19 prevention and for reduction of transmissibility of COVID-19 [ 4 , 5 , 6 , 7 , 8 ]. Several articles of different doctors and scientists recommended for a clinical trial on intranasal or intraoral application of PVP-I.…”

“…It is clear that washing hands, wearing masks, and social distancing are effective measures to ght the pandemic [6,7]. In addition, considering that COVID-19 contagion, evolution and dissemination have strong associations with the mouth [8,9], gargling with antiseptic mouthwashes has been suggested as an extra preventive measure against COVID-19 [7,8,10,11,12,13,14,15,16,17]. However, in the cases of diseases, such as in uenza, which are caused by SARS-type viruses, virucidal activity is essential for such measures to be effective [8].…”
