Powder Reuse Cycles in Electron Beam Powder Bed Fusion—Variation of Powder Characteristics

Abstract: A path to lowering the economic barrier associated with the high cost of metal additively manufactured components is to reduce the waste via powder reuse (powder cycled back into the process) and recycling (powder chemically, physically, or thermally processed to recover the original properties) strategies. In electron beam powder bed fusion, there is a possibility of reusing 95–98% of the powder that is not melted. However, there is a lack of systematic studies focusing on quantifying the variation of powder … Show more

“…The hypothesis based on the literature data about other powder materials [ 32 , 33 , 34 ] was that AlSi7Mg0.6 powder would degrade with each cycle: its surface would be oxidised and PSD would increase toward bigger particles [ 35 ]. Therefore, it was expected that the laser absorption would change due to the surface oxidation and PSD, impacting the process conditions and the final sample properties.…”

“…The method is open to different possible extensions and improvements, in terms of both image processing algorithms and image acquisition equipment, including the use of ad hoc illumination sources or a selective use of the radiation spectrum to enhance the characterization of the powder bed surface. As a future development, powder bed monitoring in EBM can be further extended by exploiting different sensing methods to detect and characterize other phenomena of interest, such as surface powder oxidation [33,34], which is currently not feasible with the proposed approach.…”
