Power Aware Mobility Management of M2M for IoT Communications

Abstract: Machine-to-Machine (M2M) communications framework is evolving to sustain faster networks with the potential to connect millions of devices in the following years. M2M is one of the essential competences for implementing Internet of Things (IoT). Therefore, various organizations are now focusing on enhancing improvements into their standards to support M2M communications. Thus, Heterogeneous Mobile Ad Hoc Network (HetMANET) can normally be considered appropriate for M2M challenges. These challenges incorporated… Show more

“…For example, selecting an operating interface in such multi-radio enabled device, utilizing parameters, such as pre-defined Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) values, channel utilization ratio, and achieved throughput was proposed in [144]. Similarly, energy-aware network selection mechanisms [145]- [147] as well as vertical handover mechanism [148] have been proposed to find the best trade-off between cost, energy, and data rate. Additionally, another solution would be to allow devices/objects to connect to a Point of Attachment (PoA) that is expected to consume the least amount of energy among all PoAs, taking critical parameters into account, such as RSS, channel utilization, collision probability, traffic class of the device and power consumed in each wireless states [12], [149], [150].…”

“…The techniques such as energy‐aware scheduling, server consolidation, and DVFS optimize energy consumption within servers and network communication. Considering network communication, internet traffic significantly impacts the total energy consumption and is minimized based on considering the effect on energy consumption while replicating data for high availability …”

“…Using licensed bandwidths also makes it easier for equipment to work together. However, the existing LTE protocol does not consider secure, minimally delayed M2M connectivity (Popovski, 2014); hence, supporting the overwhelming amount of M2M services (Ahmad et al, 2015;Paul et al, 2015) is a crucial necessity for the forthcoming 5G norm. Although the future 5G norm is expected to satisfy the needs of the IIoT, the likelihood that it will be implemented in the industrial management sector continues to be high.…”
