Stokes amplification has been demonstrated in a single-stage Raman amplifier using collinear geometry with near-diffraction-limited seeds at very high efficiency and relatively high fluence, producing near-diffraction-limited Stokes beams from highly aberrated pump sources. Single-stage amplification of over 20 000 was achieved with converted fluences up to 1.5 J/cm2. We find excellent agreement between the experiment and our full Raman code for all the measured parameters. In addition, detailed calculations and measurements of the near-field-fluence distribution on the output Stokes beam agree reasonably well.

Two different frequency spectra are considered. In the first case the modes are equally spaced and in the second the frequency separations are all unequal. In either case, as the beams propa.gate, both spectra eventually reach a saturation characterized by a cascading of energy into the lowest frequency if the Kerr constant is positive. The direction of energy transfer is reversed if the Kerr constant is negative. Representative examples are given for a multimode, equally spaced, laser source and for an unequally spaced source. For the former case, we give the optimum medium response time for conversion of a Gaussian spectra. If the frequencies are unequally spaced we present general conditions which have to be satisfied and give two examples.

Diffraction and dispersion effects in Raman scattering are investigated, with focused beams and pump depletion. Power broadening and Stark shifting of the molecular energy levels are included in the equations up to second order in intensity (an intermediate-power approximation). The steadystate paraxial wave equation is used to propagate the electric fields which are expanded in a series of rotationally symmetric Gauss-Laguerre functions. These functions allow diffraction and powerdependent effects to be included quite easily with the introduction of a recursive technique used to evaluate the nonlinear coupling coefficients. The resulting equations are solved analytically for a single transverse mode and numerically for the rnultirnode case. Several examples are given for conversion in H2. In order for the intermediate-power approximation to remain valid, the pump power must be less than 0.015 MW for a beam confocal parameter of 10 cm. Under these conditions we show that power-dependent focusing reduces the Stokes conversion efficiency by a factor of 5 as compared to power-independent focusing.
