Power Estimation of a Current Supplied DBD Considering the Transformer Parasitic Elements

Abstract: Power estimation of a DBD device supplied by a current source converter is studied in this article, pointing out the prominent contribution of the transformer parasitic elements. The impact of the stray capacitance and magnetizing inductance is stated and an iterative method that estimates the electrical power and DBD waveforms is presented. Results show that the magnetizing inductance can enhance the electrical power without changing the current ratings of the converter and that the stray capacitance must be … Show more

“…The charge delivered to the reactor is measured through the measurement capacitor C m (see Figure 2). These quantities are used to estimate the average power absorbed by the reactor through Lissajous figures [22]. These quantities are used by the microcontroller unit (MCU) to adjust both the power supply input voltage and frequency.…”

“…C d represents the capacitive behavior of the dielectric barrier(s), in this case the series equivalent capacitance of the two quartz cylinders. The gas is modeled as a dielectric (C g ) as long as it is not conductive (|v gas |< Vth, thus i gas = 0), and after breakdown it is represented with a constant voltage (v gas = ±Vth), the sign of which depends on the direction of the gas current [15,18,19]. The slopes of the parallelogram are used to define the dielectric and series equivalent capacitances (respectively, C d for the ON state and C eq for the OFF state-C eq being the value of the series connection of C d and C g ).…”

“…A specific power supply has been also developed to create the plasma and to control the energy injected into the NTP. This one delivers square current waveforms (Figure 3a), which is generated by the power converter presented in [18,19]. This converter consists of a DC current source connected in cascade with a full-bridge current inverter and a step-up transformer.…”

“…The size and weight of the proposed power supply can be established as a benchmark to further miniaturize and optimize DBDPA power supplies. Rueda et al (2019) studied power estimation of a DBD device supplied by a current source converter, pointing out the prominent contribution of the transformer parasitic elements. Krishna et al (2020) introduce the power supply design of diode bridge rectifier, PWM (pulse width modulation) inverter and driving circuit.…”
