Power Flow Tracing for Active Congestion Management in Modern Power Systems

Abstract: Future power systems will be based on the more active role of distribution system and its cooperation with transmission system. The main issue, which will appear in the network, is the congestion. Congestion management will become one of the crucial elements of power system operation since Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) will be playing a more important role in power systems. Moreover, the evolution also changed the character of the systems to be more dynamic—the need for precise description of power flow … Show more

“…Based on the proportional sharing principle, PFT decomposes the power on the transmission line and finds its suppliers and consumers [32,33]. As shown in Figure 2, P g1 and P g2 are injected power.…”

“…Congestion happens when the transmission capacity of a line is not able to transport the electrical power needed. To cope with these situations, generation and/or demand is adjusted by the TSO [9], thanks to the procurement of resources participating in the ancillary service market. As stated, in the project congestion resolution will be tested in coordination with the Z-EMS algorithm.…”

“…To maintain the system frequency at its nominal value, there are a designated set of control actions acted by the TSO, known as frequency control measures [9]. This part of the experimentation is focused in assessing the technical capabilities of some industrial loads to follow a rapidly (up to 4 seconds) changing power setpoint.…”

“…The congestion management and mitigation techniques are usually classified as long-term and short-term strategies. Long term congestion management methods are based on optimal network expansion programs, which have effects on time horizons in the order of decades [2]. These techniques mainly lead to the construction of new interconnections [3], [4] and to the optimal placement of phase-shift and on-load tap changer transformers, FACTS devices [5], [6], etc., which can actually modify the power flows on the AC network.…”
