Power oscillation damping capabilities of wind power plant with full converter wind turbines considering its distributed and modular characteristics

Abstract: Wind power plants (WPP) are for power system stability studies often represented with aggregated models where several wind turbines (WT) are aggregated into a single up-scaled model. The advantage is a reduction in the model complexity and the computational time, and for a number of study types the accuracy of the results has been found acceptable. A large WPP is, however, both modular and distributed over a large geographical area, and feasibility of aggregating the WTs, thus, have to be reassessed when new a… Show more

“…The wind generation's potential in oscillation damping has already been noticed by many researchers [30][31][32][33][34][35][36][37]. In this section, the potential of variable-speed wind generation's contribution to oscillation damping in the EI will be investigated.…”

“…General Electric ® offers a commercial inertia droop control, known as WindINERTIA® based on this concept [29]. Besides the inertial response, the function of power system stabilizers (PSS) in conventional generators could also be emulated by using a kinetic energy-based active power control technique [30][31][32][33][34][35][36][37]. In this manner, variable-speed wind generators could also contribute to the power system smallsignal stability.…”

“…Particularly, the ability of wind power generation to damp power system swings is a momentous problem that should be verified by designers. To actively damp the power swings, wind power plants have been suggested to be equipped with power swing damping (PSD) controller [2,3]. In a system with multiple damping controllers like power network stabilizer (PNS), PSD controller, and supplementary damping controller (SDC), variables of the PSD controller of wind power plants (WPP) should be optimally tuned in a concurrent manner.…”
