Pozzolan Based 3D Printing Composites: From the Formulation Till the Final Application in the Precision Irrigation Field

Abstract: A new eco-composite polymer for material extrusion fabrication based on fine fraction pozzolan waste was developed. In addition, the composite materials obtained were used to produce a self-watering pot with complex geometry and a permeable porous part to regulate the passage of water from the storage area to the roots of the plant. Moreover, the system was devised with a cover characterized by a UV-B barrier film. The results have shown the possibility of the 3D printing of complex geometric parts as micropor… Show more

“…The observed poor mechanical properties of wood-PLA composites are caused by the poor compatibility of hydrophilic wood and hydrophobic PLA, which results in poor interfacial adhesion. Usually in wood/polymer composites, adhesion is improved by chemical methods with the use of sodium hydroxide, polyolefin, isocyanates, triazines, maleimides, polyols, polyethylene glycol, or mineral fillers [14][15][16][17][18]. The application of these compounds allows for the enhancement of the toughness and strength of PLA-wood composites, but they have a complicated production process and increased costs.…”

“…Additionally, the specific surface area was 559.1 cm 2 /g and 139.0 cm 2 /g for roasted argan cake and pulp, respectively. The distribution lacked dispersibility, and the size of the narrow distribution (span) for roasted argan cake and pulp, respectively, was 3.1 and 2.8, calculated by dividing the difference in diameter at 90% and 10% of the cumulative volume by the diameter at 50% of the cumulative volume [ 49 ].…”

“…Only some studies already developed biodegradable and compostable containers for agriculture through 3D printing. Schiavone, Verney, and Askanian 79 developed a composite made up of natural pozzolan fillers, a pyroclastic rock from industrial mineral waste, and a PLA matrix to generate filaments for 3D printing to produce irrigation pots with a porous structure capable of regulating water flow. On the other hand, Seggiani et al 80 used blends of polycaprolactone (PLA) and collagen to produce pots applicable in agriculture through the FDM printing process.…”
