“…As such, I am confident that the racial demographics of our interview samples are representative of the race of grant recipients in each city. It is also likely that the samples are representative of the populations in each city whose homes need repair work because of the history of housing in U.S. cities that has rendered Black women most likely to have been sold homes in need of repair and least likely to have resources for repairs (Lichtenstein 2017;Lichtenstein and Weber 2015;McCormack and Mazar 2015;Sykes 2003;Taylor 2019). I additionally suspect the sample is broadly representative in terms of age due to conversations with program implementers in each city who confirmed seniors make up large majorities of recipients.…”

“…Women earn less and have higher poverty rates than men, in addition to being targets of predatory lending and loans on poor-quality housing (Lichtenstein 2017;Lichtenstein and Weber 2015;McCormack and Mazar 2015;Taylor 2019;Zaimi 2021). Black women have lower housing values compared with both Black men, and men and women of other races and ethnicities (Deng, Ross, and Wachter 2003;Howell and Korver-Glenn 2021;Parcel 1982;Sykes 2003). The fact that Black women are less likely to gain financially from their homes is also a reason that they are less likely to have the resources for maintenance.…”

“…The combination of both high homeownership and declining levels of pension replacement rates raise the question about the resulting welfare consequences for the elderly. Our study contributes to the discussion about the extent of the phenomenon of the 'income-poor, assetrich' elderly households and their characteristics in the context of poverty risk (Bradbury, 2010;Doling & Elsinga, 2013;Forrest, 2008;Gornick et al, 2009;Sykes, 2003). However, unlike in the previous literature, we did not limit our analyses to this single category where low income is paired with high wealth, but rather explored the distribution of elderly households in terms of combinations of different levels of income and wealth.…”
