PPSS: new thermoplastic for high performance composite applications

Abstract: The usage of actual reinforced thermoplastic composites for structural aircraft applications is very limited because materials with higher mechanical and physical properties are needed. In the recent years, aircraft manufacturers have requirements for new continuous fibre reinforced thermoplastic composites with a significant improved performance/costs ratio for new, structural aircraft applications. That is why a new affordable reinforced composite with a poly(phenylene sulphide sulphone) (PPSS) matrix, prese… Show more

“…The HAZ of the welded seams was studied by polarization microscopy and the effect of morphological structure developed during welding was investigated in terms of the mechanical properties of the seams. In the case of polymer joints, the appearance of new structural materials11–13 makes necessary the development of new welding technologies in addition to the traditional ones.…”

“…PASS can be processed by solution method for its good solubility in some strong polar organic solvent. PASS can be casted into asymmetric membranes by phase isolation, so it has potential application for ultrafiltration membranes . However, the applications of this material were limited for its poor melt flowability and its thermal‐oxidation resistance at high temperature (up to 340–350 °C) .…”

“…Polyarylene sulfide sulfone (PASS), [22][23][24] which contains -SO 2 -group on the polymer chain, is a kind of highperformance engineering thermoplastic material similar to PPS. The existence of a strong polar group of sulfone (-SO 2 -) in the main chain of PASS induces strong interand intra-actions among the molecular chains.…”
