Practical aspects of immunocytochemistry in canine lymphomas

Abstract: The aim of this study was to evaluate the utility of immunocytochemistry in a standard veterinary practice and to determine the immunophenotype of tumor cells in cases of multicentric lymphoma in dogs by immunocytochemical analysis of fine-needle biopsy specimens. The study was performed on cytological samples collected from 54 dogs, in which multicentric lymphoma was recognised based on clinical data, cytology or cytology and histology, and follow-up information. Diagnosis of lymphoma was established accordin… Show more

“…As it was shown in the present study, the correct diagnosis, in cases of malignant tumors localized in abdominal or thoracic cavities can be achieved using cytopathology supported by immunocytochemistry. Data on the application of ICC in the examination of cellular samples collected from solid masses and fluid samples are available in the literature (Hoinghaus et al 2002, Hoinghaus et al 2007, Hoinghaus et al 2008, Tzipory et al 2009, Sapierzyński 2010. However, detailed data on usefulness of such method of staining in differential diagnosis of tumors localized within serosal cavities are lacking.…”

“…In some cases when morphology of examined cells is not sufficient to recognize its origin, immunocytochemistry can be used to confirm the cells origin. As it was shown in previous own studies, immunocytochemistry can be used to examine cellular smears collected from lymph nodes affected by lymphoma in dogs, and immunophenotype of neoplastic cells can be established easily by using this method of staining (Sapierzyński 2010).…”

“…In spite of its great potential, IHC is still relatively rarely used in Polish veterinary diagnostic laboratories. The few examples of its use are almost exclusively dedicated to oncological analysis (Dolka 2009, Sapierzyński 2010. To the best of our knowledge, there are no publications on swine pathogens detection by IHC in Poland.…”
