Practical Aspects of Insulin Pen Devices

Abstract: Insulin pen devices have several advantages over the traditional vial-and-syringe method of insulin delivery, including improved patient satisfaction and adherence, greater ease of use, superior accuracy for delivering small doses of insulin, greater social acceptability, and less reported injection pain. In recent years, pens have become increasingly user-friendly, and some models are highly intuitive to use, requiring little or no instruction. Despite this progress, uptake of these devices in the United Stat… Show more

“…20,36 While not confirmed in a clinical trial, a lower injection force is expected to facilitate simpler operation and reduced injection-site pain. 16,32,33,[37][38][39] JS had the lowest mean injection force of the HUPs investigated (5.94 N for the flow rate 6.00U/s). 22 All HUPs required a smaller mean injection force than the maximum force that can be exerted on such devices by the pediatric population (>21 N).…”

“…15 Studies and reviews of technical qualities of insulin pens commonly claim theoretical usefulness to people with dexterity or visual disabilities. 4,5,7,[16][17][18][19][20][21][22] Future studies making such claims should clarify the significance by linking laboratory data to information about the relevant human factors. Furthermore, studies of diabetes technology that include human subjects should purposefully include individuals who have a full range of severity of the impairments for which benefit is claimed.…”
