Practical considerations for establishing writing groups in interdisciplinary programs

Abstract: Academic writing capabilities are a cornerstone of success in doctoral programs, yet prove to be a point of anxiety and apprehension for many students. Providing support for academic writing within interdisciplinary programs poses special considerations, as students in these programs are called upon to transcend single disciplinary perspectives to address a central area of research, and to integrate multiple different disciplinary perspectives that may be conflicting or overlapping. When treated as a social pr… Show more

“…Members of writing groups often find that in tandem with the benefits of receiving critical feedback on their own writing, critiquing their peers' work can also be invaluable in creating a culture of peer support and gaining insight into their own professional development (Aitchison 2009). While it can make sense for members of a writing group to have similar writing goals, diversity of background and experience can also enrich the writing group's potential for peer learning and support (Bergen et al 2020).…”

“…In contrast, single-disciplinary and multi-disciplinary research collaborations increase impact output in highly specialized fields. Therefore, interdisciplinary research collaboration fosters deeper interaction and integration of various disciplinary perspectives (Bergen et al, 2020;Gewin, 2014;Pykett et al, 2020;Sá, 2008;Van Noorden, 2015).…”

“…In addition to sharing difficulties and challenges in doctoral writing groups, there is also an opportunity to share ideas and different perspectives among the members (Beasy et al, 2020;Bergen et al, 2020;Cahusac de Caux et al, 2017;Doody et al, 2017;Guerin, 2013;Lam et al, 2019;Stylianou et al, 2017). Despite writing group members working on different projects or being at different stages of their research, they are still able to share similar experiences, such as preparing for milestones or searching for literature.…”

“…Despite writing group members working on different projects or being at different stages of their research, they are still able to share similar experiences, such as preparing for milestones or searching for literature. Working with doctoral students from other disciplines or with different topics also means that there is an opportunity to exchange knowledge and understanding beyond students' own immediate research projects (Aitchison, 2014;Beasy et al, 2020;Bergen et al, 2020;Guerin, 2013;Lam et al, 2019). A diversity of perspectives may develop doctoral writing group members' ability to think about how they can contribute to their field of knowledge by linking their ideas and expertise (Aitchison, 2014;Bergen et al, 2020;Lam et al, 2019).…”
