Practical Guidelines for Valid and Reliable Youth Fitness Testing

Abstract: Accurate measures of youth fitness are needed by researchers and practitioners. Evidence of validity and reliability are essential before results of youth fitness tests can be used to make sound decisions. This article describes a three-stage paradigm for validation research and provides guidance for conducting and understanding norm-referenced and criterion-referenced validity and reliability research. Advice is provided on how to administer fitness tests and how to use fitness test results in ways that promo… Show more

“…In view of the importance of motor development in children's overall health, it is imperative to have valid measurements in order to make sound interpretations and decisions (Mahar & Rowe, 2008). This study gives insights into the latent trait(s) underlying motor assessment in early childhood.…”

“…Another important factor is the purpose of the assessment, which is related to the research or educational question (Mahar & Rowe, 2008). Test instruments are constructed using different theoretical assumptions (e.g., product-or process-oriented approach).…”

“…In the recent years, there were many scientific works and researches published, particularly by USA authors, elaborating certain problems and issues connected with follow-up of the fitness within the teaching of physical education [24][25][26][27]. One of the most important issues being discussed in these researches is the issue of establishing normative reference that would allow proper assessment, interpretation and comparison of the level of physical fitness of school children in terms of the age, gender, region etc.…”

“…However, according to the National Association for Sports and Physical Education (NASPE), "The primary goal of assessment should be seen as the enhancement of learning, rather than simply the documenting of learning" (NASPE, 1995). There has been considerable debate about whether school-based fitness testing is a good use of time in the curriculum (Mahar and Rowe, 2008;Silverman, Keating and Phillips, 2008;Welk, 2008;Morrow and Ede, 2009). Some of the main uses of fitness testing include facilitating in fitness education, providing feedback and allowing personal tracking (Welk and Meredith, 2008).…”

“…A recent supplement of "Measurement in Physical Education and Exercise Science" characterized different perspectives about youth fitness testing. Mahar and Rowe (2008) described a threestage paradigm representing the validation process used in fitness-related research. They emphasized the importance of reliable and valid fitness testing techniques and guidelines, especially the meaningfulness of confidence in the testing process and why it is needed to ensure accurate data.…”
