Practical Intelligence and the Virtues: An Aristotelian Approach

Abstract: This chapter sets forth the main aim of the book, viz. to argue that virtue ethics cannot survive without the thesis that phronesis, much as Aristotle conceived of it, is a crucial part of all the virtues, and that this thesis is defensible and attractive. It examines Aristotle's account of deliberation and phronesis in some detail. The chapter concludes by summarizing some of the main contemporary controversies surrounding the view that phronesis is necessary for virtue.

“…Character, Caricature, and Gossip A second recent move in virtue ethics has been to develop an updated account of virtues and vices based on recent work on traits in psychology (cf., Sabini and Silver 2005;Snow 2009;Russell 2009). In their recent books, Snow (2009) andRussell (2009) separately appeal to the cognitive-affective personality system (CAPS) developed by psychologists Mischel and Shoda (1995).…”

“…MacIntyre (1981, 123, 156-8) mentions friendship only twice. Russell (2009) barely engages friendship in his massive tome. Slote (2001) only mentions friendship in the context of broader discussions of love, community, and achievement.…”

“…I shall focus on the classical Aristotelian approach to the ethics of virtues that hinges, among other things, on the centrality of phronesis (Aristotelian practical wisdom) in the operation of the virtues, while setting aside full-blown EV approaches to legal theory such as Solum's proposal. (Solum 2003) Phronesis has attracted a large degree of theorising in ethical theory (Russel 2009) and some more specialised reflection in legal theory. (Michelon 2013) I believe such a thick concept can only be properly viewed through an analysis that explains legal reasoning also on the grounds of the qualities of the reasoner.…”
