Practical landmarks for visual field disability in glaucoma

Abstract: There is a strong relationship between BEMD and a patient's LFTD. PoF values for LFTD associated with readily available MD values provide practical landmarks for VF disability in glaucoma.

“…As described elsewhere, 9,10,12 Eyes with short follow-up (less than 4 years or less than five examinations) were excluded. The first VF examination in each series were then removed from further analysis to account for perimetric learning effects.…”

“…53 It is important to reiterate that driving is indeed consistently cited as one of the main issues for the patient with a diagnosis of glaucoma. 54 We certainly need better evidence-based tests for determining those patients who are fit to drive and this might be determined by a variety of methods using driving simulators and collision data. [55][56][57][58] Other vision-related tasks also seem to be inhibited by glaucomatous visual field loss.…”

“…106 For a patient presenting with relatively early VF loss in the better eye of MD -4 dB, -0.35 dB per year would result in a MD of nearly -10 dB; this change in MD would alter the probability of failing the vision requirements for driving from about 24% to about 70%. 107 An MD change of -0.35 dB per year is therefore clinically meaningful.…”
