This study aims to introduce a new Hybrid SIRe (simulation and reflection) Model for instructors to improve counselling skills of counselling students in the practicum course. The Hybrid SIRe Model of teaching is used by instructors, which is a combined approach involving simulation techniques (demonstration and role-play) and reflection techniques. Counselling instructors can utilise this model to establish competency and build self-confidence while conducting counselling sessions with the students.A total of seven counselling students (three males and four females) were selected from the practicum course to test the model. A mixed-method approach was used in this study. The Counselling Self-Estimate Inventory (COSE) by Larson (1992) was employed to measure a mastery level of counselling skills among counselling students. Data were gathered from the counselling instructor’s field notes and counselling students’ reflections. Then, the obtained data were analysed using thematic analysis to explore the experiences of a new teaching method by the counselling instructor. The results showed a significant difference between the initial and final assessment of the COSE by comparing means . In conclusion, the Hybrid SIRe Model of teaching has an excellent benefit for counselling instructors to ensure that the practicum students can master counselling skills, which in turn develop their competence levels, help grow their professional identity and promote a better service in the future.

Building a practice-oriented model of pre-service teacher education

The article analyses modern trends in the university graduates’ training based on a practice-oriented approach, which is interpreted as training focused on the specifics of solving pedagogical problems that arise in real practice. The world experience of practice-oriented educational practice aimed at the formation of a creative, thinking teacher is analysed. The author’s three-segment practice-oriented model of teacher training has been developed. The structural components of the model and the links between them are described: principles of model building (practice-oriented orientation, principles of flexibility, validity, compliance and integrativity); system-forming subjects (professional community, university and school); blocks (target, factorial, theoretical-methodological, content-technological, effective). The peculiarity of the visual image of the constructed model (fractal) is that each separate segment of the system retains the properties of the entire system, which means that at each level, target guidelines are preserved and the basic requirements for the preparation process are consistent with each other.

Company’s work, growth and development are facilitated by the synergy between employee education and working. However, fresh employees who recently graduated from higher education institutions are often mismatched to their jobs due to their imbalances between skills offered or, in other words, education, and skills needed or, in other words, practice in the world of work. For bridging the gap between graduates’ skills and company’s needs, technical universities traditionally devote much time to students’ practical training. The aim of the present paper is to analyse scientific literature on practice based approach underpinning empirical study of needs of teaching staff within PEESA III Project for incorporation of practice based approach into engineering education at master level in South Africa. The data was collected through focus group interview at Cape Peninsula University of Technology in May 2019. The findings of the present research are that university teachers’ experience in practice based approach at universities in South Africa has to be enriched. The following research question has been formulated: How to organize a teacher professional development within teacher training for effective incorporation of practice based approach into engineering education at master level in South Africa? Directions of further research are formulated.
