Pragmatic Classification of the World's Salticidae (Araneae)

Abstract: This paper, dedicated to search for identification methods of genera of Salticidae (Araneae), presents prototype of a “Handbook of Jumping Spiders Identification”, based on morphology of palps, spermathecae and ducts, as well as some other easily noticeable characters. It includes diagnostic drawings of representative species of each genus, additional survey of diversity of these characters in 4800 recognizable species is available instantly, by hyperlinks provided to parallel Internet "Monograph of the Saltic… Show more

“…Prószyński's more recent (2017a) classification into genera, however, is discordant in many respects with our results, as can be seen in the many combinations that we establish or reinstate below in order to achieve monophyly of genera and subgenera. This discord may have arisen partly because Prószyński was not attempting to create a taxonomy that reflected phylogenetic relationships, but rather the distribution of a few diagnostic characters (Prószyński 2017b).…”

“…Prószyński, who developed our understanding of north-temperate species in a series of papers (1968,1971,1973,1980), recently (2016, 2017a) partitioned this diversity into several genera: Sittipub Prószyński, 2016, Sittiflor Prószyński, 2017, Sittilong Prószyński, 2017, Sittisax Prószyński, 2017, Sittiab Prószyński, 2017, Attulus, and Sitticus. Prószyński did not intend this classification to be phylogenetic, but rather "pragmatic" (Prószyński 2017b), which is to say, not based on a conceptual justification. If a classification rejects reference to a broader theory, whether about monophyly or adaptive zones or predictivity across many characters, then it is not clear what it means, how it can be tested, or whether it can even be correct, except in its specific statements about the few characters mentioned.…”

“…The paper follows methodology of "pragmatic classification" proposed by Prószyński (2016aPrószyński ( , 2017 and practiced by Prószyński, Lissner, & Schäfer (2018) "Taxonomic survey of the genera Euophrys, Pseudeuophrys and Talavera, with description of Euochin gen. n. (Araneae: Salticidae) and with proposals of a new research protocol", Ecologica Montenegrina 18: 24-74. which postulates identification of Salticidae by direct comparison of either specimens, drawings and photographs (whichever is possible), complemented now by experience of Jørgen Lissner, Aart Noorden, Pierre Oger and by Michael Schäfer in macrophotography of live spiders, which revolutionizes diagnostics but requires deep change in collecting procedures. The present paper is based on data of literature, supported by own experience of authors, with a shift to color macrophotographs of live specimens, whenever possible.…”

“…The paper analyses two little know European species of EUOPHRYINES, listed now by World Spider Catalog as Euophrys semiglabrata (Simon, 1868) and Saitis imitatus (Simon, 1868). Their current classification is based on general appearance and shape of palps, the latter being characteristic for the whole group of genera EUOPHRYINES (according to Prószyński (2017), (Euophryini according to Maddison, (2015)), but devoid of characters linking them with known genera. Current genus placement cannot be sustained, however, because both species differ from the above mentioned genera by the most important genus character -internal structure of epigyne (Figs 1Q,N respectively).…”
