Prairie Revegetation of a Strip Mine in Illinois: Fifteen Years after Establishment

Abstract: We examined the long‐term success of prairie planting on a former strip mine in northeastern Illinois. The site was reclaimed and planted with prairie species in the 1970s. Total biomass increased over time, largely as a result of an increase in biomass of non‐prairie species. Biomass of prairie species remained unchanged because of an increase in Panicum virgatum (switchgrass) offsetting decreases in Sorghastrum nutans (Indian grass). Total biomass was less than values published for other restored prairies (7… Show more

“…The low abundance of forbs (Warkins and Howell 1983;Howe 1994aHowe , 1994bHowe , 1999Brown and Bugg 2001) and dominance of P. virgatum (Schramm 1990;Corbett et al 1996;Baer et al 2002) was not unique to our experiment. Many studies have noted the difficulty in establishing subdominant forb species in grassland restorations (Warkins and Howell 1983;Zajicek et al 1986;Howe 1999;Jackson 1999).…”

“…The soils also contain high concentration of Al, Mn, Fe, Zn, and Cu which are toxic to the plants. Moreover, shortage of soil micro-flora restricts the decay of plant material due to which the natural biodiversity is invaded by inferior species (Corbett et al 1996;Singh et al 2002). Some mineral overburdens release salt, heavy metal, and radioactive pollutants, effluents like ammonia, arsenic, asbestos, cadmium, copper, cyanide, lead, mercury, etc., which on leaching contaminates the land and water resources.…”
