Abstract: We consider these results rather alarming, as they indicate a considerable need for both preventive and curative interventions in German students. However, further epidemiological studies are needed to prove the generalizability of our findings and to examine functional interrelations among and the course of these psychological syndromes.

“…The prevalence of depressive disorders found in the present study coincides with the prevalence at Bailer and colleges (2008) at the University of Mannheim. A comparison of the results for anxiety disorders showed a much higher prevalence in the present study (Bailer et al 2008). During the 2 weeks prior to the survey, 16.3 % of the sample showed anxiety symptoms and 8.4 % of the sample experienced symptoms of both disorders.…”

“…In German student samples, gender differences for depression were found by Steptoe et al (2007). Bailer et al (2008) were only able to show gender difference for anxiety and not for depression. The prevalence of depression and anxiety in different fields of study and different years were also explored.…”

“…Some other published papers have pointed out that only a relatively small proportion of the students affected by mental disorders seek and receive clinical attention. [14][15][16][17] This applies especially to substance-related disorders 18 and might explain the somewhat low prevalence of those disorders in our sample. Also at lower proportions, we found students with diagnoses commonly regarded as severe mental disorders, such as schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders, along with bipolar disorder.…”
