Pre-Operative Assessment and Post-Operative Care in Elective Shoulder Surgery

Abstract: Pre-operative assessment is required prior to the majority of elective surgical procedures, primarily to ensure that the patient is fit to undergo surgery, whilst identifying issues that may need to be dealt with by the surgical or anaesthetic teams. The post-operative management of elective surgical patients begins during the peri-operative period and involves several health professionals. Appropriate monitoring and repeated clinical assessments are required in order for the signs of surgical complications to… Show more

“…This will help to identify patients with a high risk of complications during and after surgery. Akhtar, MacFarlane and Waseem ( 2013 :317) further supported this. Physical assessment preoperatively is important to identify any risk factors for example, patient identification or to alert theatre staff if a patient has allergies and even pacemaker and specific blood results.…”

“…Study participants acknowledged that they were working in “silos” and not maximizing the use of the information collected throughout the perioperative continuum. This result was surprising given the importance of the information collected as part of the pre‐operative assessment which is known to help establish a baseline for surgical patients by becoming aware of their vulnerabilities (Akhtar et al, 2013) and identifying their needs and risk factors (McShane & Honeysett, 2013). Malley et al (2015) reported similar findings where the urgency to complete tasks and lack of communication when transitioning patients to the next level of care rendered the work of pre‐operative nurses invisible.…”
