Pre-Service Science Teachers’ Preparedness for Classroom Teaching: Exploring Aspects of Self-Efficacy and Pedagogical Content Knowledge for Sustainable Learning Environments

Abstract: The technological reconfiguration of humanity and advancement requires initial teacher training (ITE) programs that create and enhance sustainable learning environments (SLEs) where teachers are prepared to embrace posthuman pedagogy to teach confidently. This case study aims to examine pre-service science teachers’ level of preparedness and teaching efficacy beliefs to teach in SLEs. “…According to PK, lecturers should match teaching methods with e-learning technologies, ensuring the digital resources are engaging, interactive, and supportive of various learning styles (Koehler & Mishra, 2008;Schmid et al, 2020). This alignment is highlighted by TPACK, demonstrating the integration of technological, pedagogical, and content knowledge (Koehler & Mishra, 2008;Lekhu, 2023;Mosia & Matabane, 2022;Schmid et al, 2020). When implemented successfully, this integration can notably improve the quality and relevance of e-learning experiences (Schmid et al, 2020).…”

“…In addition, the prevailing shortage of qualified teachers who are proficient in indigenous languages means that some teachers may lack the necessary language skills to accurately assess learners' language development (Romski et al, 2018;Wildsmith-Cromarty et al, 2022). This can result in inaccurate assessments and therefore, this can have negative consequences for learning outcomes (Lekhu, 2023). Moreover, resource inadequacies also affect the allocation of instructional time being allocated to indigenous language instruction, as teachers may prioritise other subjects because of a lack of materials and support for indigenous language instruction (Nkosi, 2020;Tsebe, 2021).…”

“…This notion recognizes that learners have inherited and intra potentialities to learn and perform academically but that these require what Erick Corte and Barry Fraser referred to as powerful learning environments (Monique et al, 2006). Learning environments make change and transformation desirable and possible, as that can affect growth and excellence (Lekhu, 2023).…”
