Pre‐service teacher‐delivered behavioral skills training: A pyramidal training approach

Abstract: This study evaluated the effectiveness of using a universitybased pyramidal approach (i.e., train the trainer) to teach four pre-service teachers to train another person. These pre-service teachers were taught to use behavioral skills training (BST) techniques to train other professionals to use an evidence-based practice. Transfer to a generalization trainee was probed and three participants maintenance of BST fidelity was probed one year later, after the participants had begun teaching. Results indicate that… Show more

“…The focus of the current study was on the effectiveness of using BST within the context of teacher preparation programs at universities, therefore, data were not collected on the children participants during any portion of the study. This is consistent with previous research regarding use of BST in teacher preparation programs (see Andzik & Schaefer, 2020; Sawyer et al., 2017). Collecting child data would add to the discussion regarding using EBP to manage behavior during instruction and future research should include such data in their results.…”

“…The results of this study corroborate previous studies and the need to train our pre-service special educators of the methods in which to provide coaching and feedback to paraprofessionals (Andzik & Schaefer, 2020). Higher-education programs must take a deeper look and their preparation programs and consider management training of their future teachers.…”

“…This method of teaching accelerates training as it is provided in tiers, allowing for more individuals to be trained within a shorter period of time. Pyramidal training has been utilized within educational settings to train educators on various assessment methods such as preference assessments [16] and functional analyses (e.g., [17]) as well as intervention strategies [18]. For instance, Andzik and Schafer (2020) used pyramidal training combined with behavior skills training (BST; [19]) to teach four special education pre-service teachers how to coach four general education pre-service teachers to increase opportunities to initiate (OTI) for students with complex communication needs.…”
