“…In the present study anaemia did not parallel either the duration or severity of the acute exacerbation leading to admission; however, various additional factors may occur to modify the degree of anaemia, such as previous iron therapy and the amount of iron stores existing before the acute attack. The onset of symptoms may occasionally be a poor guide to the start of the disease process; a case has been reported (Ormerod and Tonkin, 1963) where histological changes preceded symptoms altogether. Also diarrhoea, although usually an early symptom, may be inconspicuous if minimal rectal changes have occurred even with advanced colonic disease.…”
