Prebiotic effect of glycerol galactoside isolated from color-faded nori in rats

Abstract: Glycerol galactoside (GG; floridoside: 2-O-glycerol-a-D-galactopyranoside, and isofloridoside: 1-O-glycerola-D-galactopyranoside) is known to be a component of edible red seaweed nori. Recently, we have found that lowquality nori (color-faded nori), which has a low protein content, contains a large quantity of GG. From further studies, we have also found that GG has prebiotic characteristics in vitro. In this study, we evaluated the in vivo prebiotic activity of GG in rats. Dietary GG selectively increased the… Show more

“…The results were promising as laboratory animals have been shown to have increased numbers of Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus (Kuda and others ; Hu and others ; Wang and others ). Other parameters indicating a prebiotic activity are the pH of the cecal content, organic acid concentrations, and fecal weight (Wang and others ; Ishihara and others ). To be considered prebiotic, a compound must possess 3 criteria: first, it must not be digested in the upper gastrointestinal tract (GIT); second, it must be a selective substrate for the growth of beneficial bacteria; and, third, it must have beneficial effect on the host's health.…”

“…Glycerol galactoside (GG; floridoside, 2-O-glycerol-α-Dgalactopyranoside; isofloridoside, 1-O-glycerol-α-D-galactopyranoside), a component found in red seaweed nori, significantly increases the number of Lactobacillus in the intestinal tract of mice. 63 Both GG and fructooligosaccharide (FOS) diets significantly increase the number of Bifidobacterium without changing the total number of Enterococcus and Clostridium sphaeroides. In addition, low-molecular-weight seaweed extracts can be used by the intestinal microbiota, which significantly increases the content of acetate and propionate of in vitro fecal fermentation broths.…”
