As the second most important greenhouse gas after water vapor, carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) has reached up to 414 ± 1.8 ppm in 2020 (GMD-ESRL, 2020), and continues to rise due to fossil fuel emissions (IPCC, 2007;Keeling, 1993). Carbon uptake into the ocean controls atmospheric CO 2 concentrations to a large extent, and so mitigates greenhouse warming. The ocean carbon reservoir is approximately 50 times that of the atmospheric carbon pool and 20 times the terrestrial carbon pool (Holmén, 2000). To better understand the role of the ocean, it is fundamental to determine regional air-sea CO 2 exchange rates.
