Precariousness and Quality of Life—a Qualitative Perspective on Quality of Life of Households in Precarious Prosperity in Switzerland and Spain

Abstract: Households' resources and constraints are key components of quality of life (QOL). QOL also depends on how these are evaluated. In times of crisis one expects subjective wellbeing and quality of life to decline. We argue that the quality of life depends on objective living conditions, their subjective evaluation and the ability to maintain or improve the situation of Bembedded individuals^. This ability, in turn, depends on the opportunities provided by the state, labour markets, families and communities. We a… Show more

“…One of the main assumptions of the positive psychology framework is the relevance of optimization on disposition and the use of personal strengths [6,8,12,23] to prevent the future depletion of resources [39,40] and experiences of reduced quality of life [41]. “…We currently live in a time of great economic changes, and the need to save for retirement is determined by the rise in the cost of living in the future and by the augmentation of the older population (Annoni and Weziak-Bialowolska, 2016 ; Budowski et al, 2016 ). Increased life expectancy and limited sustainability of public pension system underline that it will be very important to have sufficient economic resources to deal with retirement time (Lytle et al, 2015 ).…”

“…Finally, an interesting link was found between the experience of health problems and adaptation. The importance of health for QOL in precarious prosperity has already been discussed (Budowski et al 2016). Adaptation to precarious living conditions seemed to be possible in this study's sample when the people who experienced the health problems were (at least partially) cured or stable.…”

“…Similarly, longitudinal research on precarious prosperity and well-being is only quantitative (Tillmann et al 2016). Qualitative and comparative research on precarious prosperity has begun to address the aspects of QOL and adaptation (Budowski et al 2016;Sieber and Vlase 2016). The results show that the ways in which opportunities provided by the state, the labor market, the community, and the household are perceived influence the strategies that households apply to improve or maintain their socioeconomic positions.…”
