The outbreak of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) has become a severe global acute respiratory pandemic around the world in just a few months with an increasing number of infections and deaths. COVID-19 is a highly contagious and fatal disease. Almost everyone in the population is susceptible, and the incubation period is 1–14 days, mostly 3–7 days. The clinical symptoms of the COVID-19 are fever, dry cough and fatigue. Some patients are accompanied by symptoms such as nasal congestion, runny nose, sore throat, myalgia and diarrhea. Severe patients could even develop acute respiratory distress syndrome, septic shocks, metabolic acidosis and multifunctional organ failure, etc. Due to the relatively closed environment of dental clinics and the unique nature of dental procedures, both dental personnel and patients are easy to get infection through currently known respiratory droplet transmission, aerosol transmission, close contact transmission and other ways, inducing mutual cross-infection. Dental practitioners are facing unprecedented challenges due to the high risk of exposure to droplets and aerosols from saliva and other body fluids during dental procedures. Based on our experience and relevant research, this article introduces the basic knowledge about COVID-19 and the corresponding protective measures for dental practitioners, includes the risk of infection during dental procedures, the precautions related to the patients, infection control measures during dental treatment in clinics, protection measures at different levels for dental practitioners, and emergency dental treatment for confirmed COVID-19. It is the responsibility of every dental practitioner to fully understand the characteristics of the new coronavirus and strictly implement the most appropriate protective measures to reduce and control the risk of cross infection in dental procedures.

La microbiota de la cavidad bucal está compuesta por miles de microorganismos, incluidas bacterias, hongos y virus, que encuentran su nicho ideal en ella. La presencia de bacterias patógenas y sus productos de metabolismo interfieren con la homeostasis del tejido oral, lo que lleva al desarrollo de enfermedades como la caries, periodontitis y enfermedades respiratorias, como la neumonía y enfermedades más graves como el coronavirus (CoV). El coronavirus es una amplia familia de virus que pueden causar diversas afecciones, desde el resfriado común hasta enfermedades más graves, como ocurre con el coronavirus causante del síndrome respiratorio de Oriente Medio que ha convertido en un fenómeno mundial (MERS-CoV) y el que ocasiona el síndrome respiratorio agudo severo (SRAS-CoV), ocasionando fiebre, síntomas respiratorios como la tos y disnea o dificultad para respirar. En caso más complicado, puede ocasionar neumonía, síndrome respiratorio, insuficiencia renal e, inclusive, la muerte. Las transmisiones del coronavirus se han descrito con tiempos de incubación entre 2-10 días, facilitando su propagación mediante el contacto con saliva, fluidos, falta de higienización en las manos o superficies contaminadas, sin embrago el odontólogo está más propenso a este virus sino aplica las medidas pertinentes. Por lo tanto, esta revisión de literatura disponibiliza información sobre la prevención en la práctica diaria del odontólogo frente a este fenómeno mundial.

A B S T R A C T BACKGROUNDSwine flu is causing a massive fear among the common public in India since its emergence in 2009. Influenza A H1N1 in humans can occur as mild illness or it can result in serious life-threatening complications like pneumonia, respiratory failure and death in some people. Health care professionals, who are involved in treating the swine flu affected patient, should be well aware of the symptoms of swine flu as well as precautionary measures to be followed during the treatment of the disease in order to protect themselves as well as the community. We wanted to investigate the knowledge and awareness about swine flu among paramedical staff working in various private health care institutions in Puducherry, India. METHODSThis study was a cross sectional study, conducted among paramedical staff working in various private health care institutions at Puducherry in December 2018. 250 participants were included in the study. The participants were given predesigned questionnaire which included age, gender, occupation and their knowledge, awareness and preventive measures for swine flu. RESULTS49.2% of participants knew about cough and cold symptoms. Fever, which is one of the symptoms of swine flu was known to 47.2% of swine flu participants, 20.8% of participants were aware that swine flu causes breathlessness and 100% have known about deaths due to swine flu. Regarding prevention of swine flu, wearing face mask was known to 94% of participants and 83.6% of participants had known about hand washing for prevention. 60.8% of participants had known about vaccine usage for prevention. 56.8% avoided overcrowded places and 6.8% adopted home stay in order to prevent swine flu. CONCLUSIONSMost of the participants of this study were very well aware about symptoms and preventive measures regarding swine flu since they are paramedical staffs presently working in different health care centers. But many studies previously conducted among common population states that the awareness regarding swine flu is very less. Hence, the government should conduct more awareness-and preventionprograms about swine flu in the community.
