Preceptors' views on their role in supporting newly qualified nurses

Abstract: The first 6 months of being a registrant has challenges for both the preceptee and the preceptor. The implementation of preceptorship models that include preparation and support for preceptors is essential to alleviate issues of transition, retention and stress. Preceptors identified areas for improvement such as regular update sessions, formal peer support, and protected time to discuss and complete the documentation.

“…Studies on the orientation or transition period, the effects of orientation programmes and the elements of successful orientation are mainly done from the NGNs’ point of view (Bowles & Candela, ; Bratt & Felzer, ; Fink et al., ; Kovner et al., ; Malouf & West, ; Regan et al., ; Scott et al., ; Strauss et al., ). Previous studies about preceptors’ perception focus on preceptors’ role and preceptorship programme and NGNs’ readiness for practice (Hickey, ; Muir et al., ; Tracey & McGowan, ). Preceptors are an important part of the NGNs’ orientation period (Boyer, ; Fink et al., ; Rush et al., , ; Ulrich et al., ) and as they may work side by side with NGNs for a reasonably long period they have first‐hand information concerning orientation.…”

“…The long‐term influence of early work experience should be a key motivator for investing in the support of new graduates and new hires. Well‐developed preceptorship programmes aimed at transitioning new graduates into the workplace in the UK are worthy of implementation into other settings (Banks et al, ; McCusker, ; Tracey & McGowan, ). Excellent preceptoring requires release time, preparatory education related to pedagogy and reflective dialogue, and skills in developing trusting relationships (Carlson et al, ).…”
