“…This variation becomes negligible when considering projected areas. Literature data on lead runoff rates are scarce and fragmented: Schultze-Rettmer (1995) reported annual Pb runoff rates lying between 1 and 4 g.m -2 yr -1 , as calculated from a theoretical corrosion rate and Matthes et al (2002) reported values between 2.9 and 4.1 g.m -2 yr -1 . Runoff rates evaluated in this study are higher in both cases.…”

“…As a consequence of metal runoff, in different countries in EU and USA have been detected traces of different metals (zinc, iron, copper and lead) in soils and waters, and in the biosphere, which are originated from the corroded surface of metal structures, and from ecological point of view they are dangerous. The analysis of the literature shows that since 1990 in Europe and USA the attention to the metal runoff is enormous [8][9][10][11][12][13][14]. The zinc retention capacity of the soil proved to be between 80 and 99%, hence allowing a small portion of introduced zinc in the rain or the natural zinc content of the soil to pass through the soil core during a continuous rain event [10].…”
