SUMMARY Cycloconverter is an AC/AC converter which produces ac output voltage with desired amplitude and frequency. Cycloconverters are being used in important and very high power applications, such as cement, steel and chemistry industries. In this paper, comparing different modulation methods and types of cycloconverters, a novel improved cycloconverter, i.e. non‐circulating current cycloconverter with integral control method, is determined. Despite the ordinary topology and structure of the cycloconverter, there is a serious problem for its implementation. Therefore, a new practical solution is presented here to remove the problem, i.e. the inherent incompatibility between integral control, as one of the best and most optimal modulation methods, and non‐circulating current cycloconverter, as the more industrial and economical type of cycloconverter. The new solution is cost effective and without complexity. Also, a proper practical bank cross‐over method has been chosen and implemented for the novel cycloconverter. Using the presented solution, the non‐circulating current cycloconverter with integral control method is simulated and implemented successfully, for the first time. The results of simulation and implementation demonstrate the success of the presented novel solution and control algorithms for the cycloconverter. Copyright © 2011 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
