Precise localization of DBD plasma streamers using topographically patterned insulators for maskless structural and chemical modification of surfaces

Abstract: Dielectric insulators with patterned topographic relief were used in dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasmas operating at atmospheric pressure to spatially define the formation of filamentary microdischarges (“plasma streamers”). Precise localization of microdischarge streamers is demonstrated with concomitant treatment patterns on surfaces, enabling localized etching, surface micro-texturing, and chemically and structurally induced wettability modification without the use of lithographic masks on the sampl… Show more

“…Electrical and electronic components used in aerospace applications are more susceptible to discharge effects due to lower streamer initiation voltages [6]. Additionally, altering the N 2 /O 2 ratio in air also affects streamer characteristics, and these mixed gases have been applied in fields such as gas cleaning [7,8], ozone generation [9,10], and surface treatment [11,12].…”

“…Streamer discharges in N 2 /O 2 mixtures at atmospheric pressure have been widely used in various fields [1], including surface treatment [2,3], plasma-assisted combustion [4], plasma biomedicine [5,6], and air purification [7,8]. Most of these applications rely on chemically active species, mostly generated through energetic electron collisions with * Author to whom any correspondence should be addressed.…”
