Precision measurement of the nuclear magnetic dipole moment of175Lu by optical pumping of free Lu+ ions

Abstract: Abstract. Nuclear spin polarization in the 4fZ46s2 aSo ground state of lVSLu+(I=7/2) ions is achieved by optical pumping with the resonance line (1So-~Pt, 2=261.5nm). Nuclear magnetic resonance of the free ions in He buffer gas yields for the magnetic dipole moment /~(75Lu)=2.2240(11)#, (with diamagnetic correction). This value can be used for a more accurate determination of the magnetic dipole moments of other Lu isotopes from known A factor ratios. A comparison with nuclear induction measurements in solids … Show more

“…Brewster angle reflection of the light from 5 quartz plates and transmission through a pressed quartz block results in circularly polarized pumping light. In the resonance cell Be atoms are evaporated from a coaxial tantalum oven [11] (heated directly * A separation of the two D lines was not possible without a severe loss in intensity but would have been desirable for two reasons [12]: (i) the change of absorption induced by AmF=--+1, AF=O transitions acts in the opposite sense for D 1 and 0 2 signal observation, (ii) the two D lines build up an electron spin polarization with the same sign only below a particular buffer gas pressure Po at which the polarization due to D z pumping changes sign. z.…”
