Precision measurements of plastic deformation of β‐CuZn at helium temperatures

Abstract

Dedicated t o Professor V. I. STARTSEV on the occasion of his 70th birthday By attaching condenser plates directly t o the tensile specimen, creep rates of B-CuZn single crystals have been measured by the capacitance change in the strain-rate range of lo-' to s-l and at temperatures between 0.7 and 1 7 K using a 3He cryostat. Slope of the temperature variation of the stress t o give a constant strain-rate decreases below 5 K and seems t o level off at 0 K. The strain-rate sensitivity becomes almost constant below 2 K. The conventional activation analysis showed t h a t an ARRHENIUS type strainrate equation breaks down drastically below 5 K. For an effective temperature T * which gives 2 K at 0 K and asymptotically coincides with the testing temperature at 5 K, t h e experimental results can be fitted to the ARRHENIUS strain-rate equation with an activation enthalpy A H ( t ) for the PEIERLS mechanism. The above result is interpreted in terms of the quantum-mechanical oscillation of the dislocations.Bei direkter Befestigung der Kondensatorplatten an der Zugprobe sind kapazitive Kriechgeschwindigkeiten in B-CuZn-Einkristallen in1 Abgleitgeschwindigkeitsbereich 10-7 bis s-1 und bei Temperaturen zwischen 0.7 nnd 1 7 K niittels ekes 3He-Kryostaten gemessen worden. Die Neigung der Temperaturanderung der Spannung, welche eine konstante Abgleitgeschwindigkeit ergibt, vermindert sich unterhalb 5 K und scheint fur T 0 K zu verschwinden. Die Geschwindigkeitsempfindlichkeit wird unterhalb 2 K nahezu konstant. Die konventionelle Aktivierungsanalyse zeigte, daI3 die ARRHENIUSCeschwindigkeitsformel unterhalb 5 K drastisch versagt. F u r die effektive Temperatur T*, sie betriigt 2 K bei T = 0 K und stimmt bei 5 K anniihernd nlit der Versuchstemperat u r uberein, konnen die experimentellen Ergebnisse a n die ARRHENIus-Geschwindigkeitsforrnel mit der Aktivierungsenthalpie d R ( z ) fur den PErERLs-Mechanismus angepafit werden. Das obige Ergebnis wird als quantenmechanische Vibration der Versetzungen interpretiert.
