Precision of fit of implant‐supported screw‐retained 10‐unit computer‐aided‐designed and computer‐aided‐manufactured frameworks made from zirconium dioxide and titanium: an in vitro study

Abstract: Optical and tactile scanners with CAD/CAM technology allow for the fabrication of highly accurate long-span screw-retained ZrO implant-reconstructions. Titanium frameworks showed the most consistent precision. Fit of the cast alloy frameworks was clinically inacceptable.

“…This was not the case with the ZrO-P bars that had constantly increasing values toward the distant implant 15. Previous data from cuspid-supporting zirconia frameworks (NobelBiocare Procera system) showed in contrast to the present ZrO bars an u-shape precision pattern for the different implant positions [10]. Two ZrO-P bars showed maximal values of >80 m for the most distant implant 15.…”

“…In the fabrication of prostheses using a CAD/CAM workflow, long-term clinical success 1,2) depends on the systems involved in scanning the tooth surface and in prosthesis design, which determine the marginal and internal fit of the restorations to the abutment tooth [3][4][5][6][7][8] . Dental impressions are the most important step in the fabrication of prostheses in restorative dentistry.…”

“…On the contrary, the occurrence of a chemical reaction layer from the titanium casting is an inevitable disadvantage 51,52) . As an alternate method for the manufacturing of titanium frameworks, most implant superstructures, including abutments, have been fabricated using computer-aided design/computeraided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) instead of casting [53][54][55] . Using CAD/CAM, titanium frameworks for RPDs have also started being fabricated by milling titanium disks and additive manufacturing from titanium powders.…”
