“…These data, however, do not show whether the effect is due to vitamin A itself or carotenoids. The evidence from both animal experiments (Wynder and Klein, 1965;Foy and Kondi, 1984) and human studies (Thurnham et al, 1982;Crespi et al, 1979;Munoz et al, 1982) indicates a possible association between riboflavin deficiency and oesophageal cancer.…”

“…Kolicheva (1970) and Kolicheva et al (1970) reported high prevalences (88 % and 66%) of chronic oesophagitis in 2 areas with a high incidence of oesophageal cancer in Kazakhstan in a series of autopsies of people who had died from causes other than oesophageal cancer, and described the endoscopic and histological picture of this condition. Chronic oesophagitis was discovered in 85 % and 66% of the population in North Iran and North China, respectively, during an endoscopic survey in areas with a high incidence of oesophageal cancer (Crespi et al, 1979;Munoz et al, 1982).…”

“…By our definition, acanthosis was uncommon but not rare. Crespi's finding that 77% of patients in this population showed clear cell acanth~sis"-'~ must have relied on a significantly different division point to separate thick from normal biopsies and/or must have based this Crespi et al [10][11][12][13] do not mention basaI cell hyperplasia as a criterion for esophagitis. Qiu et al,'*,15 requiring that the basal zone be greater than 50% of epithelial thickness to diagnose basal cell hyperplasia, identified this finding in 31% of patients from Linxian and 74% of patients from Huixian, prevalences that are much greater than what we found in our biopsies.…”

“…Epidemiologic studies have revealed that environmental factors, such as tobacco smoking, heavy alcohol drinking, and micronutrient deficiency, are linked to the etiology of this malignancy (2). In addition, chronic inflammation, which has been associated with carcinogenesis in various tissue sites, might also contribute to the risk of developing ESCC (3,4). However, only a portion of individuals develop ESCC, suggesting that individual genetic makeup may play a role in esophageal carcinogenesis.…”
