Predicted Values for Clinical Exercise Testing1–3

Abstract: Following thorough evaluation at rest, 265 of 400 current or ex-shipyard workers rode a cycle ergometer with equal work increments each minute to exhaustion while continuous multiple noninvasive cardiorespiratory measures and intermittent intra-arterial blood pressure and blood gas measures were made. Seventy-seven men, with a mean age of 54, including some who were smokers, obese, or hypertensive, were judged to have normal cardiorespiratory systems based on history, physical, electrocardiogram during rest an… Show more

“…The behaviour of PAa,O 2 during exercise cannot be predicted from resting lung function; it has to be measured. Normally Pa,O 2 does not decrease during exercise and PA-a,O 2 at peak exercise remains below 2.66-3.99 kPa (20-30 mmHg) [48,49]. A PA-a,O 2 .3.99 kPa (30 mmHg) at peak exercise is defined as abnormal and is commonly accompanied by arterial desaturation (i.e.…”

“…Values for VO 2 were indexed to body weight and expressed as percentage of predicted values for healthy age-and gender-matched subjects as reported in previous studies with a similar protocol. 13,14 The ratio of V E to VCO 2 (V E /VCO 2 ratio) was measured at the ventilatory anaerobic threshold. The respiratory exchange ratio (RER; VCO 2 /VO 2 ratio) was measured continuously.…”

“…18 Data assembly and basic statistical comparisons were performed with SAS software (version 9.1, SAS Institute). Survival curves and Cox proportional hazards analyses were performed with Harrell's Design and Hmisc libraries 19 of the S-plus 6.2 software package (Insightful, Inc).…”
