Purpose: Visual functioning evaluated by the Catquest-9SF questionnaire has shown to be a valid measure for assessing a patient’s prioritization for cataract surgery. This study adapted Catquest-9SF for visual function outcomes post uni-lateral cataract surgery or bi-lateral cataract surgery. Methods: Visual functioning was assessed before and after uni-lateral or bi-lateral cataract surgery using the Catquest-9SF questionnaire. Patients were enrolled to this study prior to their cataract surgery between March 29 and April 30, 2021 at Shellharbour Hospital, Australia. Catquest-9SF questionnaires were completed prior to and 3 months post surgery. Resulting data were assessed for fit to a Rasch model using WINSTEPS software (version 4.2.0). Catquest-9SF data analysis of Chi-square, Wilcoxon sum test, and Fischer’s test were performed in R (version 4.1.0). P value <.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: Sixty-one patients (mean age = 73.2 years, 62% female) were included for analysis. Catquest-9SF response thresholds, adequate precision (person separation index = 2.58, person reliability = 0.87, Cronbach’s alpha = 0.74), uni-dimensionality, and no misfits (infit range 0.65–1.33; outfit range 0.64–1.31) were recorded. The mean of item calibration for patients was -0.22 post-operatively. There was significant (P <.05) improvement (16.3%) in visual functions across all nine Catquest 9-SF items. There was a significant mean visual function difference between patients with uni-lateral (10.1%) and bi-lateral cataract surgery (22.3%) pre-operatively and post-operatively. Conclusion: The Catquest-9SF questionnaire showed excellent psychometric properties and can assess visual functioning in an Australian population. There was a significant improvement in patient visual function post cataract surgery and higher functioning with bi-lateral cataract surgery.

Purpose: сomparative clinical and diagnostic efficiency of the quality of life (QОL) according to the PHEC-22 and Catquest-9SF questionnaires after bilateral cataract phacoemulsification and monofocal IOL implantation. Patients and Methods. We observed 148 patients with binocular cataract (mean age 58.6 ± 1.8 years). All patients underwent standard cataract phacoemulsification with implantation of a monofocal IOL. Patients were examined before and after (one month after surgery on the second eye) surgery. The results of the survey on the questionnaires PHEC-22 and Catquest-9SF were evaluated by the general indicator of testing (GIT) as the sum of points for all questions (taking into account the “weight” coefficients in the questionnaire PHEC-22). Along with this, each of the patients underwent a study of binocular BCVA. Results. A statistically significantly higher clinical and diagnostic efficiency of the PHEC-22 questionnaire compared to Catquest-9SF was established, which is confirmed by a higher (by 0.17 rel. units, p < 0.01) level of correlation with BCVA, as well as a higher probability of compliance of the QOL level with the BCVA range, especially at low (0.4 and less rel. units, by 18.5 %, p < 0.01) and medium (0.5–0,8 relative units, by 7.3 %, p < 0.05) values of BCVA, while in the range of BCVA 0.9–1.0 relative units, no significant differences between the questionnaires were found (p > 0.05). Conclusion. The results of a comparative study after bilateral cataract phacoemulsification and monofocal IOL implantation using the PHEC-22 and Catquest-9SF questionnaires revealed a significantly higher clinical and diagnostic efficiency of the PHEC-22 questionnaire, which is associated with the methodological principles for developing a questionnaire based on the “social model” of health with the involvement of expert ophthalmologists and the use of the optimal procedure for scaling the patient’s responses. The results obtained (taking into account clinical normalization) allow us to recommend the PHEC-22 questionnaire for inclusion in the complex diagnosis of patients with cataracts both before and after surgery in solving a number of urgent problems — a comparative assessment of IOL, a study of the effectiveness of methods for postoperative rehabilitation of patients, the choice of the optimal formula for calculating IOL and some others.

Background: Cataracts are a public health problem, especially in low- and middle-income countries, where the greatest limitations of health care systems are observed, making access to treatment difficult. This study aimed to determine the factors associated with the presence of cataracts in adults over 50 years of age in Peru. Methods: A cross-sectional analytical observational study was performed of data from the 2019 Demographic and Family Health Survey (ENDES – acronym in Spanish). The dependent variable was the self-reported diagnosis of cataracts (yes or no). Crude and adjusted prevalence ratios (aPR) were calculated using a generalized linear model of the Poisson family with a log link function to estimate factors associated with self-reported cataract diagnosis. Results: We analyzed the data of 8775 Peruvian adults older than 50 years; 1322 (16.68%) self-reported a diagnosis of cataract. A higher prevalence of having cataracts was associated with being aged 60-69 years (aPR: 1.40; 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.21-1.61) and 70 years and older (aPR: 2.78; 95% CI: 2.44-3.18), identifying as being of native ethnicity (aPR: 1.30; 95% CI: 1.16-1.47), having undergone ophthalmologic evaluation in the last 12 months (aPR: 2.29; 95% CI: 2.07-2.53) and having diabetes mellitus (aPR: 1.30; 95% CI: 1.13-1.51). The prevalence of cataracts was lower in subjects belonging to the poorest wealth quintile (aPR: 0.55; 95% CI: 0.43-0.70) and those with a higher level of education (aPR: 0.74; 95% CI: 0.62-0.88). Conclusions: In Peru, one out of six adults older than 50 years self-reported a diagnosis of cataracts. People older than 60 years, being of native ethnicity, having had a visual acuity evaluation in the last 12 months and having diabetes were associated with a higher prevalence of cataracts. These factors should be considered when implementing strategies for health education, promotion and prevention to ensure access to early ophthalmologic care.
