Predicting onset of high speed gas metal arc weld bead defects using dimensional analysis techniques

Abstract: The onset of geometric defects such as humping or discontinuous weld beads during gas metal arc welding (GMAW) frequently limits the use of higher welding speeds and increased productivity. In the present study, a dimensional analysis of the GMAW process was performed in order to identify a number of dimensionless groups formulated based on various GMAW process parameters and material properties that could be used to predict when humping or discontinuous weld beads would occur. Experimental data from bead on p… Show more

“…An important number of different physical phenomenon are involved in welding operations and a dimensionless analysis can be an interesting way to study their influences [10][5] [1]. The Buckingham π-theorem was used to determine the appropriate dimensionless parameters containing the welding variables and material properties that affect the welding process.…”

“…For example, some rely on special shielding gas mixtures and expensive equipment, and others add difficulties in operation and process optimization. Since GMAW is one of the most economical, efficient and versatile fusion welding processes, 10 it is of great significance to develop low-cost and easy-operation high-speed GMAW.…”

“…After solidification, humped bead forms. [5][6][7]10 To suppress humping bead, it is crucial to reduce the momentum of the backward molten metal flow in the weld pool. Some modified GMAW used two wires to expand the action area of the arc force so that the backward molten metal flow in the weld pool is weakened.…”
