Predicting portal hypertension as assessed by acoustic radiation force impulse: correlations with the Doppler ultrasound

Abstract: Objective The purpose of this study was to assess the value of acoustic radiation force impulse (ARFI) for evaluating portal hypertension by correlating the elasticity of liver cirrhosis, as measured by ARFI, with haemodynamic indices measured by Doppler ultrasound. Methods We evaluated the data of a total of 154 prospectively enrolled patients who underwent both duplex Doppler ultrasound and ARFI imaging. The duplex Doppler ultrasound indices, including the mean portal vein velocity, splenic index (SI) and sp… Show more

“…Twenty-two beagle dogs, from the institutional animal nutrition laboratory, were selected and comprised the mesocephalic group, according to the following defined criteria. The sample size was calculated based on previously results 64 and 15 mesocephalic and 30 brachycephalic dogs were needed to allow identification of a minimum 0.4 m/s differences on the shear wave velocity of the hepatic parenchyma, with a statistical power of 89%, using a 95% significance level. The final selection of 48 brachycephalic dogs and 22 mesocephalic allowed an increase of the statistical power to 95%.…”

“…In our study splenomegaly as a possible sign for portal hypertension had a sensitivity for CSPH of 76 %. Furthermore, Doppler ultrasound has recently been compared with ARFI for the noninvasive diagnosis of portal hypertension and weak correlations with the portal splenic index were found [38]. However, the recent Baveno V consensus meeting on portal hypertension, the largest conference for this topic, did not report or discuss sonographic markers for the estimation of portal hypertension [3].…”

“…При этом транзиентная эластография отличалась наилучшими характеристиками при использовании в качестве самостоятельного предиктора (AUC 0,883) [11]. Однако в настоящее время в литературе нет единого мнения в отношении возможности использования скорости сдвиговой волны (ARFI) для диагностики портальной гипертензии у пациентов с циррозом печени [12][13][14].…”
