Predicting Speed of Sound in Fatty Acid Alkyl Esters and Biodiesels at High Pressure

Abstract: Knowing the thermophysical properties of biodiesels, in particular the speed of sound, over an extended pressure range is essential to optimize injection and combustion processes in diesel engines. The aim of the present work is therefore to propose a predictive method for estimating the speed of sound in biodiesel based on the fatty acid alkyl ester profile. For that purpose, a group contribution method was first developed to predict speed of sound in fatty acid alkyl ester compounds in target p, T ranges (29… Show more

“…Recently, Daridon , reported a new method to predict the speed of sound in both pure fatty acid alkyl esters and biodiesel fuels. They proposed where c is the speed of sound, x i and M i are the mole fraction and molar weight of ester i in the biodiesel, γ = 0.975, and cM γ, i is a Murnaghan-type equation where p ∼/MPa = p – 0.1 and parameters A , B , and C are functions of temperature. , …”

“…Pure component properties form the basis of mixture properties, of which pure components are typically a special case, and the article by Gupta et al 58 describes the development of databases and correlations for this purpose and the article by Daridon is also along these lines. 61 Huber et al 62 describe the REFPROP EOS for reference quality properties of high volume chemicals and Alsaifi and Elliott describe a methodology to avoid artifacts in noncubic EOSs. 63 Articles by Lira et al, 46 Lira et al, 48 Fouad et al, 64 and Elliott 65 describe recent developments regarding Wertheim association theory.…”

“…Using the experimental results of speed of sound as a function of temperature and pressure and the recent equation proposed by Daridon,33 an equation model was proposed to represent the behavior of speed of sound as function of temperature, pressure, and composition of the isobutanol and biodiesel mixtures.…”
