Predicting the Likelihood of Eurasian Watermilfoil Presence in Lakes, a Macrophyte Monitoring Tool

Abstract: In regions with abundant and diverse freshwater resources, it is difficult and costly to survey all lakes at the level required to detect invasive plants. Effective allocation of monitoring resources requires tools that identify waterbodies where exotic species are most likely to invade. We developed and tested models that predict conditions in which Eurasian watermilfoil, Myriophyllum spicatum, is most likely to survive and successfully colonize. We used logistic regression to model the likelihood of M. spica… Show more

“…Veltman et al 1996;Duncan et al 2001) and the use of transport vector activity as a surrogate (e.g. Buchan and Padilla 2000). Where propagule pressure was explicitly examined, 13 of 15 invasiveness contrasts and 42 of 49 invasibility contrasts identified positive associations with the success of invaders at both the establishment/spread and the abundance/impact stages, with no studies finding a negative association (Tables 1 and 2).…”

“…Developing effective approaches to mapping macrophyte properties would provide baseline data sets for such applications. Many studies have therefore attempted to identify optimal approaches to image processing for a comprehensive analysis of macrophyte ecology (Jakubauskas et al 2000;Buchan, and Padilla 2000;Ozesmi, and Bauer 2002;Heblinski et al 2010). The reliability of an integrated remote sensing data and field survey method for mapping macrophyte properties and for assessing the biodiversity of aquatic plant environments is evaluated in Phinn et al (2008).…”

“…This species is considered to be among the most troublesome aquatic weed species worldwide and has been shown to form thick monospecific stands that reduce the relative abundance and richness of other species in North America and North Africa (Grace & Wetzel 1978, Aiken et al 1979, Buchan & Padilla 2000, Smith et al 2002, Ali & Soltan 2006. The dispersal and population expansion of M. spicatum occurs mainly via auto-fragments, i.e.…”
