“…The current research framework was guided by Lazarus and Folkman’s (1984) transactional model of stress and coping, suggesting coping to be defined as ‘constantly changing cognitive and behavioral efforts to manage specific demands that are appraised as potentially taxing or exceeding a person’s resources’ ( Lazarus and Folkman, 1984 , p. 141), The goal of coping strategies is to compensate or alleviate stressful situations by means of either the reformulation of objectives or the adjustment to a new and positively assessed situation ( Galiana et al., 2020 ). Coping strategies may be in one or two ways: problem-focused or emotion-focused.…”

“…As a result, the abovementioned concepts will prove useful if they find ways into broadly interdisciplinary research on ageing, as well as outside academia. The tools for measuring positive outlook on ageing, openness to changes and the willingness to embrace them may provide a hint regarding powerful coping strategies which are key for achieving well-being [ 64 ]. Our proposed measure for positive outlook on ageing and later life—the POLA scale—may serve this purpose, as it seems to be discriminating well the “winners” of the ageing processes; it may be used to look for other important aspects which can then be treated by appropriate interventions, as in the case of loneliness.…”

“…The issues related to a person's ability to cope with problems and stress are considered in the framework of the coping theory. Coping is defined as a set of cognitive and behavioral efforts aimed at managing conditions that exceed human capabilities [24]. The main purpose of coping is to reduce stress and achieve a balanced state of functioning [25].…”

“…The two-factor model proposed by R.S. Lazarus and S. Folkman identifies 2 groups of strategies for behavior in a problem situation: an emotion-and problem-focused coping strategies [24]. Another two-factor coping model is presented in works studying the human response to trauma [27].…”
