Prediction‐correction method for optimization of simulated moving bed chromatography

Abstract: in Wiley Online Library (wileyonlinelibrary.com).A systematic algorithm for simulated moving bed (SMB) chromatography process development that utilizes dynamic optimization, transient experimental data, and parameter estimation to arrive at optimal operating conditions is described. These operating conditions ensure both high purity constraints and optimal productivity are satisfied. This algorithm proceeds until the SMB process is optimized without manual tuning. In a case study, it has been shown with a line… Show more

“…In future work, the optimal ternary operations obtained from the full superstructure should be validated experimentally. We have recently carried out experimental validation of the GFC process using a systematic model parameter correction approach 18, 23, 24, which can be extended to the full superstructure considered in this study.…”

“…Powerful criteria to design processes with nonlinear isotherms (e.g., Langmuir and Bi-Langmuir) have been elaborated in the past few years (Charton & Nicoud, 1995;Mazzotti et al, 1997;Antos & Seidel-Morgenstern, 2001). Versatile results on triangle theory for the design of smb processes have been published (Nowak et al, 2012;Kim et al, 2016;Lim, 2004;Kazi et al, 2012;Bentley & Kawajiri, 2013;Bentley et al, 2014;Sreedhar et al, 2014;Toumi et al, 2007;Silva et al, 2015;Kiwala et al, 2016).…”

“…Since the first gradient application in conventional four-zone SMB chromatography was described [97], many different types of gradient operations have been proposed. These include SMB processes involving supercritical mobile phases [98][99][100][101][102][103][104][105], solvent composition modulations [24,25,[106][107][108][109][110][111][112][113][114][115], and temperature gradients [116]. In practice, not many gradient SMB processes are practically applied because of the difficulty in precisely controlling the travelling gradient profiles.…”

“…In the main part of the review, several selected new variants of the SMB technology, which can significantly expand its potential, are described. This review is not intended as a comprehensive compilation of all options and variants proposed in recent years, as many successful applications have already been reviewed [16,[19][20][21][22][23][24] and more detailed information regarding modeling and controlling SMB can be obtained in the literature [24][25][26][27][28][29]. Accordingly, this review simply introduces and describes the advances, with a focus on introducing novel concepts and providing examples and advantages of recently proposed operating strategies in the following specific SMB areas: manipulations during shifts, altering elution strength, and separation of ternary mixtures (center cut separation).…”
