Prediction of Adhesion from Acid-Base Properties of Paint Films and Substrates

Abstract

According to van Oss et al., surface acidity parameter y+, and basicity parameter y-, together with dispersive force parameter y' of paint films and substrates were determined by contact angle measurements. Hexane, diiodomethane and ethylene glycol were used as diagnostic liquids. The interfacial tension ysp between a paint film and a substrate was calculated from these parameters and correlated to their adhesion behavior. A negative value of ysp was an indication of excellent adhesion, in practice.
