Prediction of adjustment to prison in a federal correctional population

Abstract: Investigated the ability of MMPI and correctional data to differentiate between adjusted (N = 25) and rebellious federal prisoners (N = 25). There was a difference at the 0.01 level on the HY scale, while marginally significant differences were found on the Hs and D scales (p < 0.06) and with age (p < 0.07). Comparisons of other clinical MMPI scales, the AP scale, correctional data, and ethnic background were not significant. It further appeared that prediction of institutional maladjustment from any criteria … Show more

“…Attempts to relate institutional misconduct and articulable personality dimensions have yielded mixed results. Several researchers have reported that various scales of the MMPI do not discriminate between inmates with a propensity for disciplinary involvement and other prisoners (Jaman et al, 1966(Jaman et al, , 1972Watman, 1966;White, 1980). However, other researchers have found that individual clinical scale scores (Myers and Levy, 1978) or profiles constructed on the basis of prisoner samples can reliably differentiate adjusted and maladjusted inmates (Panton, 1958(Panton, ,1979Megargee and Bohn, 1979;Edinger, 1979).…”

“…Genders and Player's (1989) approach was built mainly on U.S. and U.K. studies, which varied in size and approach and whose findings were not always consistent. Some (Boyd, 1976;Petersilia, 1983;White, 1980) found no significant difference between the rate of disciplinary reporting for Black and White prisoners. Others showed higher rates for Black compared to White prisoners (Flanagan, 1983;Ramirez, 1983), while Petersilia, Honig, and Hubay (1980) found a higher rate for White compared to Black prisoners.…”
