Prediction of atopy via total immunoglobulin E levels andskin prick tests in patients with psoriasis

Abstract: Our study is the first to use skin prick tests with psoriatic patients. Skin prick test sensitivity to mites increased in psoriatic patients, and we believe that this finding may be useful in protecting psoriatic patients from activation of psoriasis and in determining the appropriate treatment approach.

“…As we know, psoriasis is a part of an autoimmune spectrum in which diverse diseases share common underlying genetic susceptibility loci and treatment modalities. Atopy is caused by type I hypersensitivity to specific antigens through impacts of an antibody test [8]. Atopy diagnosis is performed differently in various studies.…”

“…There are limited number of studies in the literature investigating the predisposition to atopy in psoriasis and showing contradictory results 7,8 . In the present study, total serum Ig E and radioallergosorbent test (RAST) (Allergen-specific IgE Antibody test) were used in psoriasis patients in order to investigate this correlation.…”

“…First, it offers convenience as the preparation of blood tests only involves a standard blood draw. 15,16 Second, the blood test is regarded as safer because the process is conducted in vitro, and thus does not expose patients to allergens. 17,18 Third, the blood tests can serve as an alternative to skin tests for patients who suffer from severe symptoms and cannot interrupt medication.…”
